I prepared myself for the theme by reading all the material on the
weekend before the pre-theme deadline. By doing so I had time to reflect and
try to make sense of the thoughts that arose. In this
week’s lectures we focused on design research.
In the
first lecture, the professor presented his approach to design research with six
different steps:
- How to come up with an idea;
- How to solve a problem;
- How to filter ideas;
- How to validate an idea;
- How to evaluate an idea;
- How to communicate your idea.
In the
second lecture, we discussed the meaning of a prototype or why you should use a
prototype during your design research. We
came up with the following points during a brain storming: Proof of concept; to
evaluate; to find answers; to solve problems; to test theory. The professor in
this lecture highlighted the aspect “to gain knowledge” as an important reason
to use prototypes.
Since we
did not have a seminar this week, you could not really discuss my findings or
approaches from the “pre” blog post. With the lectures I was able to check my
approaches and find some differences/mistakes, but I missed the verbal
interaction with class mates in the seminar. The interactions always helped to get a
different perspective on the papers and exchange opinions.
It is good to hear that most of the time you try to start preparing for the theme a week earlier. Having time to think about what is new for us is in my opinion very important to fully understand a topic. You did a good job summarizing the most important points about last weeks theme. I already forgot about the different tools to filter ideas, but thanks to your reflection I now remember them again. I agree with you that the seminar would have been a good opportunity to discuss our thoughts and approaches and I think it helped most of us to understand the theme better.
AntwortenLöschenHi! I enjoy reading your reflection, you did a great job. It seems that understand the topic very well. I definitely agree with you that seminar would be useful. For example, for me it's a new topic, so I'd like to discuss it with other students to hear another opinions and ideas.
AntwortenLöschenHello Denise,
AntwortenLöschenThank you for your interesting blog post.
I also missed the seminar structure for this theme which I believe is the most effective way for us to learn more about a theme !
Aside from this, I agree with your vision of design research, and with the most important points of the lectures that you've underlined. Most specifically, the idea that the problem definition is the most important.
I believe a lot of people forget about that, especially engineers, for whom problems are usually very well rounded and don't necessarily need explanation, because that's how we've been brought up, by having to solve problems that were already quite well explained. In "the real world", things are not as black and white as we've been taught to believe, and the first lecture was very beneficial I believe, and should be taught to every engineer out there. I hope I'll remember this when I'm in the industry, should I ever have to design a solution for a specific issue in the world, that I'll have to define with detail and attention what problem exactly I am designing a solution for.
Hi! I also agree with you about us not having seminars for this theme, even though the subjects might not be as deep and abstract as during the first weeks, we still got a lot from discussing them. Anyways, I think you summarize the content really well despite that, so well done! The part where defining the problem takes 90% and solving it takes 10% was an interesting point, and in my opinion very true in most cases (and quite relevant to our studies as problem solving engineers!). I would have liked to read more about your own opinions of the theme, and perhaps you could draw some parallels to society or maybe even some own experiences?
AntwortenLöschenHi Corinna!
AntwortenLöschenYou always manage to write your blog posts in a very describing and understandable way, thank you for that. I totally agree with you that the fact that we didn't have any seminar made it quite harder than earlier to understand all the concept and I think that the discussions between classmates and the teacher is good for everybody. I like that you mentioned the business mind because I had forgot about that and I think that you have pointed out the main topics of the week in a good way.
Hi Corinna,
AntwortenLöschenVery well structured summary once again. I liked that you brought up the example with the hungry bear as with this example the concept of defining and solving a problem becomes very clear. As the discussions in the seminar groups of the previous themes from theme three were already quite though I welcomed the absence of the seminar group during this theme.
Hi Corinna,
AntwortenLöschenYou have done a great job on structuring and summarizing your reflection. Reading your blog is an enjoyable experience. I agree with you on your key points highlighted for the week theme, and also on the opinions on seminars. It is true that we always learn a lot from each other during discussions. It is a pity that we don't have this opportunity for this week. Still, I think reading other's blogs also helps to improve my understanding. So thanks so much for sharing your nice reflections. Good job!
Hi, thank you for sharing your reflection for this seminar, I like your way of reflection, I think you summarized the lectures very well, which is I missed in my post. You right down these six steps, and a short explanation for each step, it's very clear to understand what you get from this theme. And I agree with you, without the seminar, it's not possible to use the same way to summarize as before, and not able to change each others perception to improved more. It's a really good reflection, it include everything I wanna say as well, keep on good work.
AntwortenLöschenThanks for sharing us with your thoughts! Your thinking was very impressive. You get a good understanding on the two lectures, and I enjoyed reading through your reflections. Good job!
