Theme 3: Research and theory // Reflection

As an introduction to the lecture, we figured out that a common use of the word theory implies that something is unproven or speculative which is better characterized by the word hypothesis.  A theory is a set of proposition that aims to identify objects and their relation to each other. Furthermore, a theory is an abstract entity that aims to describe, explain and enhance understanding of the world and in some cases to provide predictions of what will happen in the future and to give a basis for intervention and action. Theory is something we construct it does not exist by itself. Knowing is about seeing. Theory is about the connections between phenomena, and explaining WHY, HOW and under WHAT circumstances acts, events, structures, and thoughts occur. Scientific theories attempt to explain the causal logic between cause and event. This is why theory ca be contrasted with praxis or practice. However, it is important to note that this distinction can be put in question, as theory is a form of practice and practice also always has a theoretical dimension. Due to these findings, you can say that truth is related to the state of knowledge right now. Truth is relative.

Furthermore, we discussed the question “What is men?” during the lecture. In our group, we brainstormed the following keywords: Technology; Cognition/mind; Very developed species; Feelings; Curiosity; Language; Culture; Social interaction/empathy; structured time/space. In class, we came to the following findings: A combination of the human bodies and consciousness; High developed species; Create and think;  Homo faber; High requirement of spiritual energy; Morality; Right/wrong; Know how to lie; Feigning; Living towards death; Egalitarian; Sexual. Furthermore, we mentioned Post-humanism, which is basically our keyword technology.

In the seminar, we discussed in small groups different aspects of the lecture and started with the different theory types Analysis, Explanation, Prediction, Explanation and Prediction (EP), and Design and Action mentioned in the paper. Furthermore, we tried to explain theory in our own words and came up with a differentiation of theory and hypothesis. To us, theory is an attempt to explain the causal logic between cause and event. But there is a difference between scientific and philosophical theory. We figured out that hypothesis is a statement or guess for research purpose which tries to explain two variables. In addition to this, we discussed that you can find truth for a hypothesis through falsification. In class, we stated that theory is what is practice not. In addition to this, we mentioned Thomas S. Kuhn, who “was an American physicist, historian, and philosopher of science whose controversial book ‘The Structure of Scientific Revolutions’ was influential in both academic and popular circles, introducing the term ‘paradigm shift’, which has since become an English-language idiom.”* A paradigm shift is a phrase to describe a change or "revolution" in the basic concepts of a scientific discipline.

All in all, I have understood the term theory better after the seminar since it was easier to get because of the simplified explanation even though my approach before the lecture was on the right track. Nevertheless, I would have find it useful if we would have discussed the chosen papers and focused a bit more on the questions since I am still not sure if I have classified my paper correctly regarding the characterization of theory types. Indeed, we discussed the different types briefly and tried to find an answer by comparing our papers with each other but we were still not sure if we were right.

  1. Great reflection! You make an excellent job describing scientific theory and its key components!

We also had quite some doubt in my discussion group whether we classified our chosen papers correctly or not. We eventually agreed that simply reading the super short explanations in the given table again often settled our minds and convinced us that we made the right decision. Maybe you could try that?

I also wrote quite a bit about scientific theory within a paradigm in my reflection as I think it was the most interesting part in this weeks seminar and maybe something that could have been focused more on in the literature for the seminar.

  2. You’ve done a really good job with your texts! Your reflection really summed up the most important concepts and terms that have been discussed during this week’s theme and I felt you did a really good job in explaining the different concepts and how they are connected. Since we were in the same seminar I recognize (and agree) with what you are saying. Another thing we discussed during the seminar was the reason why we use theories - namely to give us a framework when conducting research.

  3. Thank you for your reflections! You succeeded in explaining the week's main achievements with the help of a clear structure shaping your thoughts. The seminar has evidently accomplished to give more complexity to the subject, for example by touching on the difference between theory and hypothesis.
One statement I found especially fascinating in your chosen research paper is that politicians have yet failed to fulfil the potential of social media. It will be interesting to observe how campaign management will be perfected in the future and which risks lay in social media's power of steering voters to one side. What are your thoughts about this?

  4. Thanks for sharing us with your thought! I really enjoyed reading through your whole reflection of this week's lecture and seminar. Your reflection towards the concept of theory and the research are neatly written and hence interesting to read. I agree with most of your opinions and your effort in participating the lecture and the seminar could be easily seen. Good job!

  5. It is really good that you expained the concept of theory in a very clear and precise way.
As for the discussion of "what is man",you made a detailed list of our view, from which I couldhave a better understanding from multiple perspective.I like the view that man is combination of the human bodies and consciousness. It defined "men"both in physical perspective and spiritual perspective.

  6. Hi Corinna,
I like your blog post and I think that you have mentioned the most important keywords of the week. I think it was a interesting reading about Thomas Kuhn and the paradigm shift which we also just mentioned quickly during our seminar. And since we had the same paper for this theme, "Social Media, Democracy, and Democratization" would it be interesting to discuss the classification of their theory type with you when we have the opportunity.

  7. Hi Corrina,

I like how extensively you explained what is theory, how it is influenced with shifting paradigms. Comparing with you pre-blog post it is obvious that you learn a lot about the definition of theory. You pointed out very good and important quotes from lecture. For instance, "theory can be contrasted with praxis or practice." For me it was difficult to understand what praxis is about? Do you think that praxis could be the observing and keeping the distance phenomena? How will you interpreter praxis?

  8. It seems that you put a lot of effort in this weeks theme. Your explanation of what a theory is and how it is related to hypothesis is very detailed and includes all the important points about it. I totally agree with you that it would have been more interesting, when we would have discussed our chosen papers. As you said we did not really discuss the types of theory according to which we structured our chosen papers. I also discussed that with my group in the seminar, but a general explanation of it would have been nice.

  9. Hi Corinna!

A very well-written and well-developed blog posts. I think you conduct in a very good way a definition of theory which is accurate and well thought. You and your group reach an interesting conclusion in your discussion from the lecture "what is a man", which helps me better understand, thank you for that!

  10. I like your reflection because you pointed out all the important parts of the lecture and the seminar. However, I would like you to share with us your interpretation of post humanism. In that part of the lecture I got a bit confused and it would be really helpful if I read more about it. I have interpreted as a theory of what humans are, what is your opinion?

  11. Hi,
Thanks for your sharing! I think your discussion of "what is men" is really interesting. It shows that you are thinking about humanism. And you findings that "A combination of the human bodies and consciousness; High developed species; Create and think; Homo faber; High requirement of spiritual energy; Morality; Right/wrong; Know how to lie; Feigning; Living towards death; Egalitarian; Sexual." are fresh view to me!
